Barcelona Eliminated From Two Competitions Following Loss to Paris Saint-Germain
Barcelona was eliminated from two competitions in one night after losing to Paris Saint-Germain last night.
It has been a bad season for Barcelona, but they thought they were going to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Last week, Xavi’s team had an impressive 3-2 victory over PSG in Paris in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Although they took the lead in the second leg, their chances went out of the window when Ronald Araujo received a straight red card.
Barcelona ended up losing 4-1 making the two legs 6-4 on aggregate.
This defeat not only excluded them from the Champions League but also left them out of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
12 European teams are participating in the tournament in the United States, including the teams that won the Champions League between 2021 and 2024 – Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City & this year’s winner.
Only eight teams are determined by the UEFA club rankings, but although Barcelona is in 7th place among the remaining teams in the rankings, they will not qualify for the competition.
Because it is not allowed for more than two teams to represent one country in the competition.
Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were both eliminated from the Champions League last night, but Atletico Madrid is ahead of Barcelona in the UEFA rankings.
Therefore, Atletico Madrid will join Real Madrid in representing Spain in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Other teams that have secured their place in the Club World Cup include Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and either FC Salzburg or Arsenal.
