HOW COVID 19 PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED THE TEA SECTOR

By - - [General]

The agricultural sector has really suffered the effects of Covid 19. Not until the month of March 2020, Tea farming activities used to operate normally. Farmers who were more often used to mass plucking of tea in their farms have been forced to practice scheme plucking, a system that is more practiced in the multinational companies. This endures that there is the required minimum social distance between one plucker to the other. More often during peak seasons when crop is high ,collection used to be done until late in the night. This however has become very difficult after the government imposed 7pm to 5am curview. This has led to reduced daily productivity per plucker for they were forced to content with reduced plucking hours and hence low income as well. Going forward therefore the stakeholders in this sector will have to come up with measures to mitigate.
