99% of people make this mistake, and it is the main reason why so many people are miserable in life. The reality of life is that it is difficult and tragic. "Suffering is built into the structure of being". Suffering can be and often is unbearable, but people have a choice, either to withdraw from suffering, which is a "suicidal gesture", or to face and transcend it, and it is between those choice that we make the mistake.

The same applies to how one should deal with the fact that life is difficult. What makes life difficult is that life is at its fundamental core, a series of problems. So you have a choice, to complain and cry about the grandiosity of your problems, or to face then and solve them. It is through the process of solving life's series of problems that we find meaning. Unfortunately, many people seem to think that the meaning of or in life is to find happiness. So we wake up every morning chasing happiness.

it's all very well to think the meaning of life is happiness, but what happens when you're unhappy? What happens you get infected with the coronavirus, will happiness carry you through that? Happiness is a great side effect. When it comes, accept it gratefully. But it is fleeting and unpredictable. It's not something to aim at – because it's not an aim. And if happiness is the purpose of life, what happens when you're unhappy?

Life is complex. There are easy answers. Which is why you must not subsribe to ideology. The world is too complex to be simplified by a set of ideological suppositions. Take it one day at a time. As Jesus said in his great sermon on the mount, "don't worry about tomorrow, sufficient for the day is the evil thereof"
